The acid in batteries used in the automotive industry for motor bikes, cars, fork lift trucks, JCBs and golf carts, is a dilute form of Sulphuric Acid, a widely used highly Corrosive mineral Acid.  Acid in batteries is usually found in Sulphuric Acid concentrations of between 33% and 35% dilution.  Even in dilute form, Battery Acid is highly Corrosive and needs to be handled with due consideration to its potential hazards.

Acid in batteries is available from 1.25 SG to 1.28 SG, the term 'SG' denoting the weight and thereby the the strength of the acid.  The strength of acid in batteries is normally predetermined by the battery manufacturers, with 1.26 SG being the most common strength for cars, vans and motorbikes.  1.28 SG is most commonly used in heavy-duty industrial batteries such as those found in fork lift trucks.

Although Battery Acid is a relatively stable material, there are a number of hazards including the fact that it reacts violently with water.  It is important that this exothermic reaction is fully understood before handling the material.  When diluting Battery Acid it is important that acid is slowly added to water, never add water to acid in batteries.  Battery Acid generates Hydrogen which presents a potential hazard as it is a flammable and explosive material.
