Battery Acid packaging must be in accordance with current legislation.  Battery Acid is classified as a Hazardous Substance for transport and therefore must be placed in a suitable container for transport in a safe manner.

It is essential that Battery Acid packaging comprises a receptacle which will have no adverse effect on the contents, nor be affected by the Hazardous Substance.  Suitable containers for ‘inner’ packaging include glass, plastic or metal.  These can also be used as a ‘single’ packaging material.  ‘Outer’ packaging materials include fibreboard, wood, plastic or metals.

battery acid packagingThere are two main categories of packaging; ‘stand-alone’ packaging and ‘composite’ packaging.  When ‘stand-alone’ packaging is used, the markings are applied directly to the container holding the substance and there is no requirement for further packaging for transport providing the ‘stand-alone’ containers are stowed and transported in a safe manner without loss of contents or undue movement.  Battery Acid packaging comprises ‘stand-alone’ containers as described.

Although from an environmental and economic viewpoint re-use of containers should be encouraged, it is essential that no damaged packaging material is ever used for Battery Acid packaging.  If the Battery Acid packaging material is damaged in any way at all, new packaging should be used.  The old or damaged packaging must be replaced, recycled or destroyed.

When filling containers, it is important to leave enough space between the fill level and the closure to allow for movement during carriage.  This space is commonly referred to as ‘ullage’.  When using a UN-approved plastic jerrican for Battery Acid packaging, it is essential that the type of closure is appropriate.  All closures used must be compatible with the containers and ensure a water-tight seal to avoid leaks.  Ideally they should be fastened to a specified torque setting.

Depending on the customer and the intended use of the product, it may be necessary to fit tamper-evident or child-proof closures particularly for products of a hazardous nature.
