When purchasing car Battery Acid, it is important to remember that this is a highly Corrosive substance with many potential hazards.  As such, car Battery Acid should always be purchased from a reputable supplier who understands the importance of adhering to the legislation which has been put in place to protect car Battery Acid supplier and Car Battery Acid customer alike.

Car Battery Acid is available in strengths between 1.25 SG and 1.28 SG, the term 'SG' denoting the Specific Gravity of the material.  Most car battery manufacturers will advise on which strength of car Battery Acid should be used for their particular battery.  Generally, car batteries tend to use strengths of 1.26 SG although the difference between 1.26 SG and 1.28 SG is minimal.  Lead-acid type batteries in motor bikes, cars, fork lift trucks, JCB's, golf carts and golf buggies all use car Battery Acid in varying strengths.

car battery acidVehicle batteries are often manufactured and shipped 'dry' to comply with Health and Saefty legislation so it is important that the cells are filled with car Battery Acid before being used.  It is recommended that car Battery Acid be replaced periodically to help prolong the life of the car battery.  Care myust be taken when filling a car battery - it should never be over or under filled.  Car batteries should be inspected from time to time to check for any signs of damage or leaking.  Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from frost.  Sometimes a 'furry' deposit can build up on the contacts, but this is a build up of sulphate crystals which can easily be wiped away.

Even in dilute concentrations, car Battery Acid is highly Corrosive and personal protective equiment should always be worn when handling or working with the material.  The PPE should include full protective clothing, approved safety glasses or goggles, acid-resistant gloves and safety boots or shoes.

Car Battery Acid can cause serious burns and long term damage to eyes and skin, resulting in blindness in extreme cases.  Ingestion of the material can be fatal.  Inhalation of the vapours causes damage to soft nasal tissue and the respiratory tract.  For these reasons, car Battery Acid should always be used in a well-ventilated area and fume extraction or breathing apparatus should be used.

Car Battery Acid is a stable material but reacts violently with water, creating an exothermic reaction and generating considerable heat.  For this reason, water should never be added to car Battery Acid, rather car Battery Acid should be added to water, slowly and carefully.

Car Battery Acid is sometimes known as Accumulator Acid, Sulphuric Battery Acid or Sulfuric Battery Acid.  Lead-acid type batteries were originally known as Accumulators.
