When transporting Battery Acid, it must be understood that Battery Acid is classified as a Hazardous Substance for transportation purposes.  This means that sets of regulations govern the way in which Battery Acid can be transported to the customer or end user.  The methods of transporting Battery Acid cover all transport by road, rail, sea or air.

In the UK the Regulations that cover the transport of dangerous goods (including transporting Battery Acid) are known as the ‘Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009’ whilst the European Agreement is known as the ADR Regulations.  However, both sets of Regulations cover almost identical matters.

transporting battery acidCarriage of dangerous goods by rail and road is covered by an international agreement which is updated each two year period.  All dangerous goods have by law to be given a Un Number to identify the product and this UN Number must appear on the outer packaging, together with orientation arrows and a hazard diamond relevant to the class of material.

Packing Groups I, II and III are used to identify the degree of hazard of each product, with I being the most hazardous and III being the least hazardous.  All Corrosive products are classified as Class 8 for transportation purposes.

Threshold limits apply to individual receptacles and full loads.  These are determined from the packing group of each particular product.  If the product being transport is below a set mass or volume, this is known as a Limited Quantity and transport rules are relaxed.  The UN Number must still be shown but this will appear in a plain white diamond.

Load limits determine the documentation and marking of vehicles that is required for carrying dangerous goods.

All Regulations put a duty and responsibility on all those involved in the carriage of dangerous goods.  This is in order to minimise the risk of incidents and product an effective response to any incident.
